EARTH 315 MILLION YEARS AGO

Synopsis
315 million years ago, long before the dinosaurs appeared, vast swamp forests covered large parts of the planet. The air contained much more oxygen than it does today, the trees looked nothing like modern ones, and giant creatures moved through dark water, peat, and dense ferns. In this immersive documentary, I travel back to the Carboniferous Period to discover what one of the strangest ecosystems in Earth's history was really like. As soon as I arrive, I find a landscape devastated by fire and begin encountering some of its inhabitants: a massive Arthropleura, flying insects with wingspans of nearly 70 centimeters, and large predators hiding beneath the waters of the swamp. But I soon discover something even more unsettling: other travelers came here before me, and not all of them managed to return. I venture deeper into a forest dominated by towering Lepidodendron, Sigillaria, and Calamites, with no birds, no flowers, and nothing resembling the forests we know today. A meter reads 32.4% oxygen, compared with roughly 21% in our modern atmosphere — a difference capable of completely changing the way fire behaves. During the journey, I witness a giant griffinfly hunting in midair, an Anthracosaurus attacking from beneath the water, a several-meter-long Pholiderpeton, enormous scorpions, eurypterids stirring up the swamp floor, and even an Orthacanthus, a strange freshwater shark. But the real danger begins when a storm triggers another wildfire. With an oxygen-rich atmosphere and enormous amounts of accumulated vegetation, different parts of the forest begin igniting almost simultaneously, forcing me to escape by following one of the waterways.
